Last year we went for a walk to enjoy the late summer here in Belgium. A pony is always a very cute animal to see. Chickens are funny. And sheeps are... well, this one is entirely from another planet, look at her pupils! Does anyone remember the Hypnotoad from Futurama?

Decía que me gusta salir aprovechando el sol a ver los campos de cultivo y los animales de granja que hay alrededor nuestro en Bélgica. Los ponis son siempre una monada, y las gallinas me hacen mucha gracia con esos aires que tienen, pero nos encontramos con unas ovejas que miraban un poco raro. Esta si os fijais tiene los ojos igualitos que el Hypnotoad de Futurama, el sapo que hipnotizaba con sus pupilas. Impresionante la oveja...

When we were leaving Vancouver we tried to get rid of all the food stocks we had at home. I particularly love how I got rid of the flour: baking bread!

This was a cibatta-style bread, with a very wet dough and excellent for sandwiches.

Hola lectores,

Esta mini-biografía blog nace para ayudar a mi gente de Tenerife a saber que fue de mi, familia incluida. Mi madre anda siempre dando mi tarjeta a antiguos amigos y familiares para que me busquen en google “por ese nombre raro”, asi que creo que este blog estático ya iba siendo una necesidad!

De paso espero que sirva para localizar a todos los que compartieron mi viaje, no solo en Tenerife sino en Barcelona, en Canadá, y ahora en Bélgica.

Esta Ana que escribe es Ana Mingorance Jiménez de la Espada, tambien conocida mundialmente como Ana Mingorance (a secas), Ana Le Meur o mas comunmente Ana Mingorance-Le Meur, y por eso es tan dificil seguirme. Este último apellido se lo debo a mi fantástico Paul. Por Jiménez de la Espada, siendo tan bonito como es, es muy dificil encontrarme. De ahi los problemas de mi madre y resto de los Jiménez de la Espada para googlearme.

Soy una bióloga lagunera y guardo muy buenos recuerdos de mis años en la Universida de La Laguna y de mis compañeros, aunque al estar tan dispersos por el territorio nacional (y parte del estranjero) he perdido el rastro a muchos. De paso digo a todo el que se reconozca (o me reconozca) que me puede dar un toque a amingorancelemeur AT gmail.com que me encantaria saber de ellos.

Si bien entré en Biología por mi amor por “los bichitos” allí descubrí la biología celular y tuve claro lo que quería hacer profesionalmente; quería dedicarme a la investigación el biomedicina, a encontrar la cura de alguna enfermedad, a salvar el mundo, vamos :-)

Así que me fuí a Barcelona a hacer un doctorado que es la licencia de cazador de enfermedades, por así decirlo. Lo que ha sido mi campo desde entonces, pero creo que le dedicare un post a eso por separado, es la investigación sobre el cerebro. Como se forma, como cambia al hacernos viejos, que pasa cuando algo va mal y sobretodo que podemos hacer para que deje de ir mal.

En Barcelona descubrí que lo mejor de ser científico no es hacer los experimentos, ni publicarlos, ni el descubrimiento en sí (en serio), lo mejor son las charlas sobre ciencia con los compañeros. Esas charlas de “te imaginas que este interaccione con el receptor de aquel y por eso no lleguen a su capa cortical?” (perdón por el lenguaje), esas, son lo major de este trabajo. Gracias a Nathalia, a Willy, a Xavi, al Reelin team en pleno, a Marta, a tantos otros del labo de la UB por todas esas charlas!

Después de 4 años intentando reparar el cerebro (no el mío) me dieron dos becas cojonudas para un proyecto en que quise rejuvenecer las neuronas (no las mias), y para el cual me fuí medio planeta mas lejos, a Vancouver, a hacer lo que llamamos un "postdoc". Resulta que no solo salio bastante bien el proyecto científicamente hablando sino que rejuvenecí yo tambien en ilusiones y energía (al margen de las canas que gané con la mudanza...). Esos tres años fuerons sin duda los mas divertidos de mi vida asi que aqui va mi recomendación para todo el que se pregunte a donde ir para hacer una tesis o postdoc fuera de España: a la UBC en Vancouver, si podeis que sea al LSI. Tim O'Connor es una pasada como jefe (neurobiología) pero hay gente genial en muchos campos de Biomedicina, incluyendo algun que otro español llamado Santi :)

Me acuerdo muchísimo de toda la gente de allí, de Matt, de Robyn, de toda la asociación de postdocs, pero como no entienden Español me lo salto en este post....

Después de esos tres años decidimos volver a Europa y me vine a Bélgica, a la empresa UCB (no UBC, si, es un lio). Ahora si que tengo la oportunidad real de ayudar a encontrar la cura de alguna enfermedad, a salvar el mundo. Han sido ya ocho años de viaje desde que dejé Tenerife y mi Laguna y todavia no he salvado el mundo pero eh! estoy en ello. Trabajo en mi campo que es la neurobiología. Trabajo con gente que viene de todo el mundo, hablo con mis compañeros en tres idiomas (de paso la lio en Español cada vez mas) y cada dia aprendo un montón más de ciencia. Pero despues de tanto tiempo sabeis que es lo mejor? las charlas de ciencia con los compañeros. Igual da que sea un doctorando catalán, una pedazo rubia canadiense o un médico polaco. Son las teorias que nos montamos y que nutren estas charlas las que son sin duda lo mejor de este mundillo científico.

Y esta es mi biografía virtual que espero que google amablemente ponga en un sitio visible para el pobre que un dia decida googlearme usando solo uno de mis nombres. La idea es poner una entrada en Inglés para toda mi gente que no habla Castellano, y los francófonos que se apañen con una de las otras dos!! :)

Hello readers,

I'm writing this mini-biography to help the people that I've met in the past track me down -- family included. My mum is always reaching to my business cards to help old friends and family google me looking for my weird multiple surnames, so this static blog started becoming a need!

This Ana who writes is Ana Mingorance Jiménez de la Espada, also known as Ana Mingorance, Ana Le Meur or more commonly Ana Mingorance-Le Meur. That’s why it's so hard to track me down! I owe my last last surname to my wonderful Paul. Searching for Jiménez de la Espada will hardly lead you to me, as I haven't published with it and I got a grand-grand-grandpa way more famous than me. Hence the troubles for my mum and the rest of the Jiménez de la Espada branch when trying to google me!

I am a Biologist from La Laguna (in the Canary islands) and I keep great memories of those years at the University of La Laguna, although I've lost track of many of my colleagues from that time that are now spread throughout the national territory and abroad. I started Biology because of my love for animals, but once there I discovered Cell Biology and I was hooked. I understood then what I wanted to do with my career; I wanted to go into biomedical research, to find a cure for some disease, to save the world (who doesn't?).

And that's why I left my island and went to Barcelona to get a PhD, which is like a hunting license for diseases so to speak. My subject of research since that time is the brain, although I think I might dedicate a separate post to it. I research how brain develops, how it changes when we age, what happens when something goes wrong and most importantly what we can do to fix it when that happens.

In Barcelona I discovered that the best part of being a scientist is not to do experiments, or to publish them, or to make discoveries (seriously). The best part is to talk about science with colleagues. Those discussions along the line of "do you imagine how cool if this interacted with that and therefore neurons failed to reach their final layer??", those are hands down the best part of it. I must thank my friends from the University of Barcelona for making me discover this and for all the discussions that we shared! (see the Spanish entry for proper acknowledgements).

After 4 years trying to repair the brain (not mine!) I was awarded two awesome fellowships to do a project that aimed to "rejuvenate" neurons (not mines!), and so I went t Vancouver to do what we call a postdoc. It turns out that not only the project went quite well scientifically speaking, but it actually rejuvenated my own energy and passion for science! I extremely enjoyed those three years and I have to recommend everyone out there to try this place: go to UBC in Vancouver, in particular if you can go to the LSI. My advisor Tim O'Connor was an amazing boss (neurobiology) and there were many other terrific biomedical scientists including another Spaniard called Santi :)

I loved walking down the corridor and talking to Matt and Adele, or crossing the lunch pod to see Greg, or Lucía. I loved sharing those years with my wonderful Robyn, and all the great postdocs from the postdoc association. From Germany, from France, Holand, Australia, the USA, Spain, Chile, China, the UK, and some Canadian as well :) what an amazing mix we had.

After those three years we decided to head back to Europe and landed in Belgium. I now work for the pharma company UCB (not UBC, it took me months not to say the wrong one when speaking). Now I finally have the opportunity to help finding a cure for some disease, to save the world. It's been already an 8-year journey since I left my island, and I still haven't saved the world but hey, I'm working on it. I work in the field of neurobiology. I work again in an international environment and speak three languages every day at work (hence my problems with Spanish now...). But do you know what I love most of my job after so many years? it is the discussions about science with my colleagues, be it a Catalan guy, a Canadian blond girl or a Polish physician. Those theories that we make up and that fill our conversations are definitely the best of this little scientific world.

And this is my little story, which I hope google will place in a visible spot so that whoever decides to google me using only one of my surnames (innocent soul) actually finds me.

Granville island is one of my favorite places in Vancouver (BC). I love the market, the little streets and the view of downtown across the water.

There is a fountain in Barcelona that we say you have to visit (and drink from it) because if you do you will come back to Barcelona. I would say if you want anyone to come back to Vancouver just bring them to Granville Island - they will be hooked and return.
